You know the story. You’re scrolling through Facebook when you’re suddenly stopped in your tracks by a post that claims something like:
“This Quiz Will Reveal Which “Friends” Character You Really Are.”
Obviously, the only choice you have to make is to click on it. Because, why wouldn’t you want to know who you’re most like—Rachel, Monica, or Phoebe?
And, chances are, you have the superstar personality quiz-maker, Buzzfeed, to thank for compiling such a set of questions you can click through during a much-needed brain break at 2 p.m. on a Tuesday.
But, let me get one thing straight: these aren’t just any quizzes. No, these are viral magic. Why? Because, while the questions may seem pretty random, they were created with a particular goal in mind: to deliver results that feel personal and allow you to relate to them. A fun self-assessment of sorts to better understand ourselves.
Thus, the sharing begins as people shout their results from the social media rooftops, and wait for feedback from their friends and followers.
Now, imagine if you could create a quiz that generates that same effect for your readers. Maaaaybe not one that gets million and millions of shares, but one that:
boosts your content engagement
helps you get those coveted email subscribers
and, allows you to get to know your people a bit better
Well, you can. When it comes time to actually sit down and write out six to 10 questions for your brand’s quiz, however, you might be stuck staring at a blinking cursor on a blank Google Doc. And, if that’s the case, you’re not alone.
What’s the secret to speeding the process up a bit? Today, I’m sharing the SIX tips you need to write an interactive quiz for your brand.
And, if you stick around until the very end, I’ll give you the tool you need to get your quiz ready and out into the social media spotlight in no time!
1. define your goals & quiz type.
Before you jump right into writing for this new and exciting project for your business, you’ll need to get serious and define some solid, achievable goals.
Do you want it to be entertaining or provide real value to your readers by helping them make a decision they’ve been putting off for months (hellooo, hiring a designer, wedding planner, travel agent for a dreamy vacay; you name it!).
In my case, I wanted a quiz that:
is more entertaining & engaging than a downloadable content freebie (which requires extra time to design in Canva, too!)
provides valuable info to both my reader & me (they learn more about their brand voice so they can create quality content and I learn more about them in the process so I can write more relatable blog posts)
Once your goals are set in stone, start brainstorming your preferred topic based on the questions you get asked the most. This is especially important if you’re a service-based biz owner like moi!
So, whatever your goals and topic of choice may be, take them and plug them into the best quiz type that’ll help you become a master achiever.
Assessment—these are also called multiple choice quizzes. Each question has one correct answer, and your outcome is based on how many answers you get right. Assessments typically come in the format of: “How much do you know about (something)?”
Personality—remember the example I offered up at the beginning of this post? “This Quiz Will Reveal Which “Friends” Character You Really Are.” is a personality-type quiz. These tend to be more fun to take, and are also shared and clicked on the most.
Scored—it’s the same kind of quiz you’d see printed on the back of a magazine. You tally up your points, and your outcome is based on the total number you got. The main goal would be to measure someone’s knowledge of a topic (like copywriting or content strategy!).
2. keep your reader front and center.
Notice I didn’t say, “readers.” That’s because, when you’re writing a quiz, you should be writing with one person in mind: your ideal reader. While this might sound as if you’re not keeping your options open, you’re instead doing yourself a favor—ensuring your reader feels heard and understood. And, when that happens, they’ll not only share your content, but they’ll also keep coming back to your digital nook for more.
3. craft a catchy & intriguing title.
Ahh. Titles. Writing them is definitely not for the faint of heart. You must craft something that not only makes sense, but is also catchy and intriguing enough at the same time.
So, put yourself in your reader’s shoes. Brainstorm at least 15-20 options that might stop them in their scrolling tracks and also set the right expectations to minimize the number of quiz “drop-offs” (people who click on your quiz and then feel it’s not meant for them after a few questions, causing them to click the red “X” button on their browser).
I don’t know about you, but that title definitely sparked my curiosity…
4. follow the coffee date rule.
If you had the chance to meet with your reader (aka quiz taker) face-to-face over a cup of coffee, would you get all fancy schmancy with your words?
That said, don’t write your quiz questions like that either. Instead, consider this an opportunity to inject your personality into your content and have yourself some fun, friend!
Yes, you’re still trying to give value to get value. But, crack some jokes or drop some puns if that’s what you’re all about. I’ll just leave some inspo for you here:

5. make it short and sweet.
Remember, your reader is probably taking this quiz during whatever ounce of downtime they may have.
So, have some R-E-S-P-E-C-T for their time! When it comes to the length of your quiz, Interact recommends aiming for 6-12 questions with 4-6 answer choices each.
And, when I say sweet, I mean it.
Avoid any negative results. You think people will share quiz results revealing they don’t know jack about wedding planning or the travel destination that fits their personality isn’t dreamy at all? Nope. That brings me to my next point…
6. create shareworthy results.
Now’s the time to give your audience what they’ve been waiting for: the results. Keep in mind, this is the portion of your quiz that will get shared across social media. So, ensure the content is valuable, yet fun! To do just that, here are some pointers:
Be Inspiring, But Also Tell the Truth – Again, when it comes to the results, you’re going to want to be as positive and inspiring as you possibly can be. Why? Because positive emotions encourage sharing. That said, create 3-4 sentences worth of results that dish out some insight and genuinely compliment your audience. The last thing you want is to tell your audience they’re something they aren’t, unless you’re seriously trying to get them to retake your quiz and get the results they were hoping for.
Drop In a Call-To-Action – Until you’re able to circle back with your reader again through an automated email campaign, don’t let the results be how your interaction with them ends. What I mean by that is, maybe you have a blog post that could help them. Or, they’d find value in scheduling a one-on-one meeting with you. Whatever it may be, include a call-to-action button that links out to it. It’ll open up the door to cultivate a lasting relationship with your people—one that’s built on their trust in you and all the insight you have to share!
