5 Clear (But Often Ignored) Signs It’s Time to Hire a Copywriter

Copywriting

How overloaded is your to-do list right now? I’m sure it’s packed to the brim because you’re a busy bee. And, if we’re being completely honest with each other, writing content for your website, social media posts, sales pages, and email campaigns probably falls by the wayside, right? Hey, it happens. But, do you know the key to helping skyrocket your business?

Content. Fresh squeezed content that your readers are ready and waiting to drink up. You’re probably thinking…

Okay. Great. Let me just add one more thing to my list. One thing that will just keep getting kicked off week after week because I’ve got other priorities.

Yeah, but guess what? You don’t have to manage every single thing that goes into running your biz all on your own. I know it’s probably not your most favorite thing in the world to do, but it’s okay to ask for help. Help with writing. Organizing. Cooking meals. You name it. It’s okay. Heck, we had groceries delivered the other week because we were too busy to go to the freaking store. People, whether you like it or not, are ready and waiting on the sidelines for you to call them in for assistance.

So, today, I’m going to help you check one thing off your to-do list—writing. That is, once you open your eyes to the clear signs it’s time to hire a copywriter.

Before we dig into that, however, I think it’s important to explain what exactly a copywriter’s role is.

In clear and simple terms, a copywriter helps you out with:

  • Research

  • Messaging strategy
  • Content strategy

  • Writing (obviously)

  • Editing and proofreading

Think of the relief you’d feel having all those tasks taken off your desk today. Now that we’ve covered the basics, what are the signs it’s time to hire a copywriter? For real this time.

1. Your content is lacking in the creative department.

Feeling like a snooze fest is happening across all the content pieces you’re pushing out? The last thing you want is for your readers to fall asleep at the computer. Instead, you should be waking them up with your words. Make their eyes widen while navigating through your pages. Use less business jargon and more friendly verbiage.

Your copy is your chance to set yourself apart from the rest of the crowd. And, it should elicit a reaction from your readers, whether they cheer, laugh, shout, you name it. When they feel those emotions from your words alone, they’ll remember you. Not another brand. And they’ll want to keep coming back for more. But, it’s not that easy for most entrepreneurs to get creative with their writing. So, that’s when you know: it’s time to hire a copywriter.

2. Writing takes up too much of your precious time.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again—your plate is 100% full. I applaud you for all you do from pursuing new clients/customers, maintaining current relationships, managing a heavy project schedule, phone calls, finances, everything. It’s a beast to run your own business. You’re an absolute rockstar.

But, when will you ever find the time you need to sit down and work your magic on a blank Word document? I’d say the chances are slim to none for that happening. Don’t take it personally. It’s not because of anything you’re doing, but because writing is a serious time suck. A good one, but it takes up too much of your precious time. And, you probably feel you’ll never get ahead of those that say they crafted all their blog content for the month in a single day. So, that’s when you know: it’s time to hire a copywriter.

3. You’re putting all your eggs in the selling basket.

Finding all your content to be repetitive in the selling arena? Let me give you a nugget of advice. If you want your content to drive traffic, you need to serve up some fresh pieces that aren’t always focused on selling what it is you’re offering. Think tips and tricks articles, industry insights or news, how-to posts—the list could go on and on.

Just stop selling to your readers. It makes them feel icky, and I’m sure you sometimes feel the same way when you’re writing those pieces. Yes, you might be worried that if you stop cold turkey, you’ll lose the chance to reel in some serious sales. Good news is, that should be the last of your worries. Your customers will join the club on their own once they feel ready.

Give them time to settle in and get comfortable. Let your content position you as an authority. Showcase the fact that you know your stuff and you’re the person to help them out or give them just what they’ve been searching long and hard for. When you do, they’ll be more inclined to show you their wallet. Feeling lost on how to give up your salesy writing? That’s when you know: it’s time to hire a copywriter

4. Writing isn’t your jam.

It’s definitely not for the faint of heart. You must be confident in your capabilities. Otherwise, your writing will suffer. Maybe you’re long winded in your sentence structure, missing unsightly grammar mistakes, misusing phrases. We can’t be perfect at everything. You’re rocking the entrepreneurial hustle, but it’s okay to not be a professional writer. For example, I’m happy to say that math isn’t my strong suit. Let’s just say that’s why I went to Journalism school.

Anyway… the point is, you don’t need to try to be something you’re not. Or attempt to master something you’re not a fan of while spending hundreds of dollars to take a copywriting for beginners course. Only to complete it still feeling 100% lost. Not everyone views writing 1,500-word blog posts as fun. So, that’s when you know: it’s time to hire a copywriter

5. You’re just way too close to your business.

It’s easy for you, as the owner of your biz, to skip over things you feel your readers already know, failing to include important details about your product or service. Or, even talk in a language they might not be familiar with yet. And, maybe you think you’ve got the writing part mastered. But, you’re missing one important thing: critiques.

When you hand your copy over to an outsider who writes for a living, you get a new perspective. A fresh set of eyes to help you take your content to a whole new level you didn’t think was possible. They’ll be able to speak in a way that reaches your readers to the fullest. Sounds amazing, right? That’s when you know: it’s time to hire a copywriter.

Have you come face to face with some of these signs already, but turned a blind eye? That’s okay! You’re not alone. It’s time to take action and ask for help. And, don’t you worry, you’ll still hold the reins. You’ll just get that load of content to-dos taken off your desk and a sweet feeling of relief in return.
